Are you disappointed to find that your website is not on the first page of results when you
search for keywords, phrase or queries related to your website? If you are like other swarms of other website owners, you may find yourself wondering, “Why isn’t my website on Google’s front page?” Search engines, like Google, index and rank the pages of a website based on diverse factors; some of which are largely unknown. However, what is known of Google’s indexing and ranking processes have provided search engine optimization (SEO) experts with reasons why certain websites do not rank high on particular keyword searches.

To understand why a website is not on Google’s front page of search results, you must first understand how search engines catalog indexed webpages. Search engines send out what are called, “spiders,” which crawl the accessible pathways of a website and collect data. The data collected is analyzed by algorithms, which process the information based on a set of predefined rules that will either increase, decrease or does not significantly alter a website’s ranking. The websites that appear on the first page of search results for a given keyword, phrase or query were placed at that position after repeated analyses of the websites’ information presented. The analyses carried out looked at an endless amount of factors and characteristics; some of which include content value, level of expertise, inbound and outbound links, amount of traffic, user engagement, inaccessible pages, broken pathways, high bounce rates, etc.

Though SEO professionals may not fully understand the rules under which each algorithm operates to alter rankings, they can tell you what is likely to improve your website’s ranking over time, such as: ease of navigation to, from and within the website; high quality content that is related to your specific website and its services; good website design; content uploaded on a regular basis; website updates; positive user engagement; consistent NAP (name, address, phone number) that is identical from your website across other directories, like Google My Business; lack of spelling and grammatical errors; number of and positive reviews of your company, if applicable; mobile usability; and clear and concise page titles that directly relate to the content of the page. While this checklist may seem exhaustive, it is, in fact, only the tip of the iceberg. The good news is that there are countless tips and tools that can be utilized to improve your website’s ranking.
